Upper Kuttanad areas under water

Incessant rain leads to rise in water level in the Pampa, Manimala, Achencoil

With many areas remaining inundated, normal life has been affected in the upper Kuttanad villages in the district. The water receding from the upstream reaches have reached the low-lying areas of Peringara, Mepral, Kadapra, Niranom and Nedumpram, leaving many rural roads flooded on Thursday.

Incessant rain for the past one week has led to an alarming rise in water level in the Pampa, Manimala and Achencoil as well as their tributaries. A brief respite in rainfall on Wednesday has led to the receding of the flood waters from the hills and plains to the low-lying upper Kuttanad region. Many rural roads in upper Kuttanad remained inundated.

Many parts of the villages of Kadapra, Peringara, Mepral, Niranom, Chathankary, and Muttar have been flooded. People mostly remained indoors.

Children from interior areas had to wade through floodwaters to reach schools. The settlement colonies of Alamthuruthy, Mundappally, and Vengal remained more or less isolated with flood waters inundating all roads leading to the colonies.

The KSEB sources at Moozhiyar told The Hindu that the catchment areas of the Sabarigiri and Kakkad projects received heavy rainfall on Thursday as well.
