Union Minister for Rural Development, Jairam Ramesh will be in Alappuzha on Saturday to attend a host of programmes including the inauguration of the meet of workers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
The meet of workers under MGNREGS will honour 2232 workers who had completed 100 working days till January 31 this year by presenting mementoes. Those panchayats which had conducted the Scheme successfully will be presented prizes on the occasion. Also, there will be prizes for the three grama panchayats (first, second and third prizes) which had spent maximum amount under the Scheme, panchayats which gave jobs to maximum number of workers belonging to SC-ST communities and those panchayats which paved way for the maximum number of working days during the year.
The meet will also host an exhibition showcasing models of various activities undertaken under the MGNREGS. The workers and their families will team up for a cultural programme. The Union Minister of State for Power, K.C. Venugopal, Kodikkunnil Suresh, MP and others will attend the programme.
Mr. Ramesh will first visit Kodanthuruthy to see the various projects implemented there under MGNREGS. He will have a look at the bund construction activities at Kodunthuruthy. This will be followed by a visit to the site where a 1.5 kms of road will be laid with geo-textile and ‘Ramacham’ saplings being planted on it by 256 workers under a project of Rs.12.51 crore. The Minister will also plant a ‘Ramacham’ sapling on the occasion.
The Minister will also visit Kuttanad to study the drinking water problems in the area and to discuss the proposed Rs 400 crore water and sanitation project to be implemented in the area.
The Minister will attend another private function at 4 p.m. and will leave thereafter for Kochi by road.
