Two activists of the SDPI were arrested by the Thiruvananthapuram Rural police on Tuesday for allegedly attacking a CPI(M) worker a few days ago.

According to the police, the accused have been identified as Al Ameen, 28, of Puthiya Karakkamandapam, near Nemom, and Arshad, 25, of Vilappil. They have been accused of assaulting CPI(M) worker Sasikumar, while he was on his way to distribute newspapers in Kattakkada early on Sunday.

The accused duo was nabbed from the Thampanoor KSRTC bus terminal soon after they had arrived from Tamil Nadu.

Series of attacks

The police said that the attack was part of the series of retaliatory attacks that followed the vandalism of DYFI district secretary I. Saju’s house at Kottapuram, near Kattakkada. Sasikumar was brutally attacked, a day after Al Ameen’s relative was allegedly assaulted by a group of CPI(M) workers. The police said Sasikumar was not involved in the particular incident. The accused were remanded in custody after being produced at a local court.

Meanwhile, the police have taken three CPI (M) activists into custody in connection with the assault on Al Ameen’s relative.
