A tribal woman on Saturday night gave birth to a baby boy in an ambulance at Vythiri in the district on her way to Government Medical College Hospital, (MCH) Kozhikode.
Priya ,21,wife of Unnikrishnan of Chalakkara tribal colony at Pakkom near Pulpally was admitted to the District hospital, Mananthavadi on Saturday morning.
When she developed labour pains in the night she was shifted to the General hospital, Kalpetta, in an ambulance owing to the absence of gynaecologists to attend her in the District hospital. But when the woman had reached the General Hospital she was referred to the MCH, Kozhikode after the case was found to be complicated.
However, she gave birth to a baby boy in the ambulance on her way to Kozhikode.
She was then admitted to the General hospital here.
“The condition of mother and child is stable,” according to hospital authorities.
Meanwhile another pregnant tribal woman at Puthuchira tribal settlement at Kunhome also had been referred to the MCH, Kozhikode on the same night.
District Medical Officer Asadevi said that the tribal women were referred to the MCH, Kozhikode, as three gynaecologists, including one senior medical consultant and two junior consultants, of the hospital were on leave on the day. The Director of Health Department had assured her that one more gynaecologist would be appointed in the hospital on Monday, Dr.Asadevi added.
CPI activists laid siege to the District hospital and DYFI activists blocked the traffic on Mananthavadi-Thalassery State highway on Sunday afternoon to protest against the alleged negligence of Health Department authorities to the hospital. A tribal woman in the district had lost her new born triplets owing to the alleged medical negligence and poor health infrastructure facilities in the District Hospital a few months ago.
