Minister for Local Administration K.T. Jaleel has said that efficiency, qualification and academic excellence should be the only criteria for appointments in higher education sector.

Criticisms and disputes would arise when importance is given to other criteria for appointments by sidelining qualified hands.

Speaking after laying the foundation for a library complex at Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University, Tirur, on Saturday, Mr. Jaleel said that money or caste or party should not take precedence before qualification and efficiency.

He said the State should take inspiration from such personages as C.H. Mohammed Koya and E.M.S. Namboothiripad. Mohammed Koya had appointed Joseph Mundassery as Vice Chancellor of Cochin University of Science and Technology. E.M.S. had appointed John Mathai as Vice Chancellor and met him in his chamber. Mr. Jaleel said that Malayalam University made progress in three years largely because of the fair appointments made there.

Efficiency, eligibility

“The realm of higher education should be that of efficiency and eligibility,” he said.

Mr. Jaleel gave away the educational aid given by the university students union to poor students. Students from A.M.L.P. School, Vakkad, and A.M.U.P. School, Vettom, accepted the aid.

C. Mammootty, MLA, presided. Tirur block panchayat president R.K. Hafsath, panchayat president Meharunnisa, District Panchayat member Anita Kishore, block panchayat vice-president Nasarulla, ward member Noor Jahan, faculty members M. Sreenathan, P. Jayarajan and A.K. Vineesh spoke. Vice Chancellor K. Jayakumar welcomed the gathering. Registrar K.M. Bharatan proposed a vote of thanks.
