Students of the Toms College of Engineering and their parents, with the support of major students’ organisations in the State, launched an indefinite dharna in front of the Secretariat on Thursday.
The future of over 100 students in the Chemical Engineering stream was at stake.
The students had approached the government, APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, and AICTE officials several times to ensure that their studies were not affected, but to no avail, they said.
The dharna was inaugurated by BJP leader and MLA O. Rajagopal.
BJP leader V.V. Rajesh, Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad Senate member P. Shyamraj, and educational activist Shajer Khan spoke.
Classes have been disrupted for the past 76 days.
Though the students held a token strike in front of the university on Wednesday and held talks with the authorities, nothing concrete had emerged.
Students air concern
The students alleged that the silence and inaction of the authorities regarding the uncertainty of the students’ future had prompted them to launch the indefinite agitation.
They said that the dharna would continue till they were able to ensure that they could continue their studies without any issues.
