The district’s coastal region between Tirur and Tanur remained tense on Thursday following the attack that took place at Paravanna Thevar Kadappuram, near Tirur, on Wednesday night.
As a sequel to Wednesday night’s masked attack, one more person came under attack by a gang on the same beach on Thursday morning. Kuriyantepurakkal Ismail, 39, was admitted to Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, with severe injuries.
Soufeer Unniyappante Purakkal, 25, and Afsar Pulingode, 22, were hacked by an unidentified gang at Paravanna on Wednesday night. They too have been admitted to the MCH with grievous injuries.
All the victims are CPI(M) workers. The party has blamed the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) for the attack. The IUML has not, however, responded to the allegation.
The police have deployed a strong contingent in the area. A case has been registered and the investigation is on. The police said they were trying to identify the culprits and that they had got some clues and arrests would be made soon.
The fresh rounds of violence have relapsed the region into uncertainty and fear as the wounds of political clash, largely between the CPI(M) and the IUML, remain unhealed.
The sensitive region was being tested by the political parties as a crucible for strengthening and expanding their bases. The region has had permanent police posts for the past few years because of its sensitivity and proclivity for violence at the slightest provocation.
