Taking its mission to clean the city forward, the Thrissur Corporation opened one more food waste collection centre at Sakthan Nagar on Friday. The huge response from the public for the first food waste collection centre opened at West Fort two months ago encouraged the civic body to open more such centres, said K. Gireesh Kumar, chairman of the health standing committee of the Corporation, who inaugurated the centre.
“The coming Onam season will see more visitors and so more food waste in our homes. Instead of throwing the waste on the streets, people should use the facilities and keep the roads clean. The Corporation will charge Rs. 3 for one kg of waste. The food waste will be collected every day from 7 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. Around 150 kg of food waste has been collected everyday at the food waste collection centre at West Fort,” he said. The Corporation gives the food waste to pig farms.
“Besides keeping the city clean, the attempt is also to check the alarming increase of stray dogs on city roads,” said Mayor Rajan Pallan.
The Mayor inaugurated the Chiyyaram South Souhruda drinking water project on Friday. He said 1,000 small drinking water projects would be started in various divisions of the Corporation in the coming year.
