Three children from State win bravery award

Three children from Kerala have won the President’s Bravery Awards, declared by the Indian Council for Child Welfare for 2014, District Collector and administrator of State Child Welfare Council Biju Prabhakar has said.

The bravery awards are conferred on those who display remarkable courage, selflessness and fortitude in the face of danger, to save the lives of others or to react against social evils or other criminal acts. The State Child Welfare Council had recommended the names of 10 children from Kerala for the awards. The winners of the award this year are P. Anjith of Kodiyeri, Kannur; N. K. Akhil Mohammed of Mavoor, Kozhikode; and P.P. Mithun of Mattannur, Kannur.

Anjith’s fete which brought him the award was his brave rescue of two children aged 15 years and 13 years, who had sunk into a marshy pool while fishing, barely managing to save himself. He is a Class VIII student of KKVMP HSS at Panoor, Thalassery.

Akhil Mohammed has been conferred the award for rescuing a four-year-old boy who had been caught in the strong currents in the Chaliyar river and was drowning. He is a Class VI student of Nibraz English Medium School, West Pazhoor P. P. Mithun rescued an eight-year-old who had fallen into a well. He is a Class X student of Kurali HSS, Mattannoor. The children will receive the awards from Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Republic Day function in New Delhi.
