Modern interrogation room set up at control room in capital city

Involving scientific techniques in investigation, a modern interrogation room was on Saturday opened at the city police control room on the premises of the Cantonment police station.

It was inaugurated by State Police Chief Loknath Behera, a few days after a similar facility was launched at the Ettumanoor police station in Kottayam.

In a bid to ensure transparency during interrogation, the air-conditioned facility, established at ₹5 lakh, has gadgets that relay audio and visuals captured through covert installations in the room.

The room has two sections divided by a one-way mirror, which, along with the live visuals, will help sleuths to analyse facial expressions and nuances of the suspect.

Besides, unbeknown to the suspect, senior officials will be able to relay instructions to the interrogator. The recordings will also be archived, enabling future reference.

Mr. Behera said another 17 interrogation rooms would be established across the State. The project was being implemented with approval of the State Planning Board.

Impetus to policing

“The facility will give an impetus to policing in the city, especially for the control room, which is the initial response team. While the interrogation room will be utilised in sensitive cases, the option will also enable the force to interrogate suspects before they are being taken to the respective police station. Moreover, the move will also prevent violation of rights through methods of torture,” he said.
