Tax collection inept, says Isaac

May 12, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - ALAPPUZHA:

Former Finance Minister and LDF candidate for Alappuzha constituency T.M. Thomas Isaac, MLA, has said low tax collection by the UDF government has affected the fiscal management of the State. Revenue collection has taken a beating resulting in inadequate finance for various projects.

The LDF, if voted to power, would adopt a series of measures to improve the financial position of the State, he told mediapersons here on Wednesday. Steps would be taken to extend aid to farm sector with a view to maintaining sustainable practices and protecting the environment.

He mooted royalty for wetlands as a prime move to prevent conversion. Farmers should be extended assistance so that farming becomes an attractive proposition. Paddy farmers should be compensated for the losses they might incur.

He said maintaining green cover in the fields is a supplementary move to retain the water table which has been dipping to dangerous levels at a number of places in recent times.

The MLA, who has implemented several projects such as waste management at the point of origin, organic farming and palliative care in his constituency, said such projects would get priority under the LDF scheme of governance. Tourism needs to have a renewed vision, Dr. Isaac said. Various heritage spots should be connected and packages should be offered so that the tourists get a holistic experience and not merely a cruise in the backwaters.
