Taliparamba and nearby areas that witnessed tension following the incidents of arson targeting vehicles, mostly two-wheelers, were limping back to normality as no fresh incidents of violence occurred on Sunday.
Nearly 15 vehicles had been set ablaze at in the area on December 18th and 19th, raising concern that the recurrent clashes between Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) workers at Talipramba and its suburbs were being exploited for inciting communal passions. Large contingents of police personnel led by Superintendent of Police Anup Kuruvila John were camping in the trouble-hit areas. No incidents of arson and violence had been reported since the peace meeting held on Saturday evening.
The police said that petrol pumps at Taliparamba were being given adequate protection. The police had also strengthened patrolling in the area.
The trouble started on December 18, when four motorcycles of CPI(M) workers were set on fire by unidentified persons in the early hours. Ten vehicles, including a car and an autorikshaw, had been set afire on December 19.
