Transsexual couple Ishaan K Shaan and Surya got married in Thiruvananthapuram on May 10, 2018.

Barely a year ago, nobody would have thought it possible. But Surya and Ishaan K. Shaan made the impossible a reality in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday morning by becoming the first transsexual couple in Kerala to tie the knot with the blessings of their families.

Laughter and mirth filled the air as Surya, decked up in traditional bridal wear, accepted Ishaan as her life partner under the guidance of their parents and well-wishers. Present to witness the historic moment were many from the LGBTQI community, and friends from different walks of life. The marriage was performed under the Special Marriages Act.

Surya had come out of the closet in the early 2000s, a time when Kerala still feigned ignorance of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) rights. She had braved heavy odds to emerge as a transgender activist and actor.

Ishaan, born in a conservative household, too had to overcome much hostility to assert his identity as a trans man. They had decided on a legal marriage and their dream came true when the two families consented to their wishes.
