The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged custodial death of Sreejith recorded the arrest of sub-inspector G.S. Deepak on Friday after hours of interrogation at the Police Club at Aluva. Charges under Indian Penal Code sections for causing voluntary hurt, unlawful detention and murder have been pressed against him, as against the three policemen arrested earlier in this connection. Hearing on the bail petitions on their behalf has been adjourned by the North Paravur Judicial First Class Magistrate to April 21.
On Friday, the SIT quizzed Deepak for about seven hours to reconfirm the evidence it already had before recording his arrest, said a top officer.
S. Sreejith, Inspector General of Police (Crime Branch) heading the SIT was also involved in questioning the sub inspector.
The SIT looked into the procedural violations in respect of the deceased Sreejith’s arrest in relation to the death of another Varapuzha native. It also tried to ascertain if the police personnel involved had a role in the alleged torture of the deceased while he was in custody.
Shyamala, mother of Sreejith, meanwhile, alleged that Parvoor circle inspector Sam Christopher and Aluva rural SP A.V. George were also responsible for the death of her son. Earlier in the day, the police used water canons to disperse a group of Yuva Morcha activists who took out a protest march to the Varapuzha police station demanding action against errant police officers in the case.
