State keen to get khadi sector under MGNREGP

Pressure being exerted by the State on the Centre, says Minister

March 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - KANNUR:

Rural Development Minister K.C. Joseph has said the State government will continue its efforts to bring the khadi and village industry sector under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (MGNREGP).

Inaugurating an exhibition of the State-level khadi and village industries products, being organised by the Kerala Khadi and Village Industries Board (KKVIB), Mr. Joseph said here on Sunday that though the State government had exerted pressure on the Central government to include the khadi and village industries works under the MGNREGP, no progress could be made so far.

Social security

The State government, however, would continue its efforts in this regard, the Minister added.

The Minister said the workers in the khadi and village industries sector should be offered social security to ensure that they continued to work in the sector.

Unless the workers got their wages for a living, the sector would struggle to survive, he said.

KKVIB Chairman K.P. Nooruddin presided.

P.K. Sreemathi, MP, District Collector P. Bala Kiran, district panchayat president K.A. Sarala, and Municipal Chairperson Roshni Khalid were among those present at the function.

The exhibition will be held at the Town Square here till April 13.

It is being organised as part of the KKVIB’s celebration of the centenary of Gandhiji’s return from South Africa.
