A draft Bill for Kerala Metropolitan Transport Authority (KMTA) to integrate various modes of transport like bus, train and boat services is under the consideration of the government.

The KMTA would be set up on the lines of the Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA), a national initiative suggested for various Indian cities.

Stating this in reply to a question in Assembly on Monday, Transport Minister Thomas Chandy said the KMTA would take care of non-motorised transport modes, integration of various modes, management of parking areas, and Intelligent Transport System.

As part of making commuting more passenger-friendly, the authority would also roll out a unified ticket — Rupay Smartcard — that could be used in autorickshaws, boats, buses and Mass Rapid Transit System like Kochi Metro.
