Panur and nearby areas became tense following a stabbing attack on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker late on Monday night.
The police said the BJP worker T.K. Jithu alias Subin (28) had been stabbed by a group of assailants. The area, known for incidents of political violence involving the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and BJP workers was tense following the incident. The BJP worker was on his way home on a motorcycle when the incident occured. Having suffered stab injuries in his head and legs, he was immediately rushed to the Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode.
Two houses of CPI(M) workers at Panur came under attack on Tuesday morning by suspected BJP workers. The attackers vandalised the houses of Isa Muhammad and Vaidyar Anandan at Kuttery near Panur. The residents had left the houses on Monday night fearing retaliation following the attack on the BJP worker.
Youth Congress office attacked
A Youth Congress office at Iritty here was attacked allegedly by the Democratic Youth Federation of India and the Students Federation of India activists on Tuesday. The incident occurred around noon. The incident is believed to be a sequel to the clashes between the SFI and the Kerala Student Union workers at M.G. College, Iritty, Monday, over the alleged destruction of KSU’s banners. Furniture and glasspanes in the Youth Congress office were damaged in the attack. A hartal called by the Congress was observed at Iritty from the afternoon as a protest against the incident.
