Revenue Minister E. Chandrasekharan has said that the government will give top priority to solving issues of the landless people and for speedy disposal of nearly 89,000 applications pending in the land tribunals in the State.
He was inaugurating a new auditorium at the Collectorate here on Saturday.
The Minister said issues relating to landlessness were aplenty. While some people had land and house, but possessed no land documents, many did not have either land or house. There were also issues concerning land assignment. The government would be able find the exact figures regarding landless people in the State only if the pending issues were settled, he said.
He called upon Revenue officials to adopt a humanitarian approach to ensure assignment of land to the landless people.
Humane approach
The number of grievances could be reduced if the officials acted humanely even within the confines of law, he added.
Ports Minister Ramachandran Kadannapally presided. The new auditorium is 50 metres long and 17.5 metres wide. Officials said the auditorium could accommodate 1,000 people. District Collector P. Bala Kiran, who welcomed the gathering, said the auditorium could be used by the government, public and semi-government establishments to conduct official programmes.
The auditorium was built at an estimated cost of Rs.38.75 lakh.
