The quality of legislative work is on the decline with ‘verbal diarrhea’ taking the place of serious legislative interventions, Speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan has said.
Inaugurating a meeting held here on Wednesday to mark the sixth death anniversary of former Minister T.M. Jacob, the Speaker said legislators of today appeared to be taking matters a little too lightly. Some were even unaware of the amendments that reached the House in their names and many could not even keep the timings of the House. Jacob was an exemplar of original and organic legislative work. With his consistent interventions in legislations over a quarter century, he had emerged as a model for subsequent generations. T.M. Jacob Memorial Trust managing trustee Daisy Jacob presented the fifth T.M. Jacob Memorial Award for the best parliamentarian to K. Suresh Kurup, MLA, at the function that was chaired by former Minister V.S. Sivakumar.
Replying to the felicitations, Mr. Kurup said he had great regard for Jacob, whose work in the Assembly and outside were an inspiration for many younger politicians like him.
Kerala Congress (Jacob) chairman Johny Nelloor delivered the keynote address at the function that was also addressed by senior journalist Sunnykutty Abraham, and trust member Ambili Jacob. Trust member Anila Anoop distributed the healthcare assistance of the trust at the function.
