The Thrissur Fast Track Court will pronounce the much-awaited verdict in the Soumya rape and murder case on November 11.

The final hearing was completed on Saturday. Fast Track Court Judge K. Raveendra Babu had on Monday held Govindachamy, 30, guilty of rape, murder, causing injury while committing robbery and criminal trespass.

While the Special Prosecutor A. Suresan demanded death sentence for the culprit, defense lawyer B. A. Aloor argued that the case was not the rarest of rare.

According to the prosecution, Govindachamy, had pushed Soumya, 23, an employee with a private firm in a shopping mall in Kochi, out of the Ernakulam-Shoranur passenger train (56608) on February 1 after attempting to rob her. He raped the seriously injured woman on the railway track. She died at the Thrissur Government Medical Hospital after battling for life for six days.

On February 3, Govindachamy, a regular on trains on the Thrissur-Shoranur route, was taken into custody from Palakkad. He has had his left hand amputated.

The court had recorded statements by 82 of the 154 witnesses. In all, 101 documents and 43 pieces of evidence were furnished against the accused. The court asked the accused 427 questions.
