The Paralegal Training and Institutional ADR Centre of Government Law College, Thrissur, has joined hands with the District Legal Service Authority to form an Anti-Human Trafficking Club to ensure the participation of society, especially law students, to combat human trafficking and provide assistance to the victims of trafficking.
P.M. Nair, IPS (retd.), former Nodal Officer, Anti-Human Trafficking, National Human Rights Commission and presently Chair Professor in Tata Institute of Social Sciences inaugurated the club at a function held at Thrissur Law College on Saturday.
“In spite of many international and national endeavours to combat this evil, it remains unabated. The human trafficking is an offence against the Constitutional mandate of Article 23 and hence it is a Constitutional obligation for the people to spot and stop trafficking,” he said. Dr. Nair said the students should pull the trigger of anti-trafficking laws and render a helping hand to the victims.
S. Sreejith, Inspector General of Police, Crime Branch, and Nodal Officer, Anti-Human Trafficking Cell, Kerala Police, delivered the keynote address. He said the preconceived notions about gender roles in the society are one of the root causes for trafficking women and children.
He said it was the duty of society, including students, to activate the now dormant mechanisms to combat trafficking. He ensured the cooperation of Anti-Trafficking Unit of the Kerala Police.
C. Mujeeb Rahiman, Sub Judge and Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Thrissur, offered the support of the authority to make this venture a success. In addition to students and faculty members of the Law College, the inauguration was also attended by members of Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of Police, Thrissur, various NGOs and paralegal volunteers of Thrissur.
