Weavers’ cooperative societies (WCSs) in the district will weave 5.7 lakh metres of fabric for the supply of uniform materials under the State government’s scheme to distribute school uniforms to students in classes up to VII for next academic year.

The scheme that envisages strengthening of the handloom sector in the State is expected to benefit the WCSs in Kannur. The societies are preparing for accelerating production to produce the targeted quantity of fabric in time.

“The societies in the district will weave 3,55,510-metre shirting and 2,14,830-metre suiting fabric,” K.T. Abdul Majeed, District Industries Centre (DIC) general manager K.T. Abdul Majeed, said. Over a lakh metres of fabric had already been woven, he said.

The societies have begun to focus on production of the uniform fabric. Hanveev will also supply 3,75,000 metres of fabric woven in the district. Industries Department Special Secretary Sanjay Kaul held a meeting of general managers of the DICs of Kannur, Kasaragod, and Kozhikode districts and representatives of the WCSs in the region on September 22 to review the progress of the work.

“The uniform scheme will benefit all the 36 WCSs,” said K.V. Santhosh Kumar, secretary of the Kannur Handloom Association. As many as 836 looms of all the 36 WCSs are involved in producing the fabric, he said, adding that they are hopeful of achieving the target. Mr. Santhosh said the wages for school uniform weaving were based on the minimum wages fixed in 2009. The amount increased by 50% following the interim wage revision twice since then.
