Ahammed Afsal, a senior Students Federation of India (SFI) activist and an organising committee member of the ongoing Kannur University Kalotsavam here, was killed and two of his friends were seriously injured when the car in which they were travelling hit a truck near Nayanmarmoola here on Saturday.
The organising committee of the Kalotsavam decided to defer the days events to Monday as a mark of respect to the departed student activist.
The accident occurred around 4.30 a.m. when Afsal was returning to the college along with two other student activists after dropping a former SFI woman leader at the Kasaragod railway station to board an early morning train. The truck bearing Maharashtra registration number collided with the car apparently taking the wrong side in the odd hours causing extensive damage to the car.
On hearing a loud noise, people around rushed to the spot and took nearly 30 minutes to extricate the trapped persons from the badly mangled car.
While Afsal, 23, a civil engineering graduate, died on his way to a hospital in Mangaluru. His friends, Vinod, 23, a resident of Panayal, and Nasruddin, 26, a resident of Puthige, were admitted to the hospital with serious injuries, the police said.
Large number of people from all walks of life paid tributes to the departed student leader. The body was buried at the Muhiyuddin Juma Masid at Nullippadi in the afternoon.
