Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi faced a security threat during his visit to the State for the inauguration of the Kochi metro last week.

Addressing reporters after a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, he said the government was apprised of the security threat by the police, though it was not revealed to the public at that time. Mr. Vijayan’s statement corroborates State Police Chief T.P. Senkumar’s revelation on the threat to the Prime Minister.

Terming the NDA’s choice for the presidential election, Ram Nath Kovind, as a political nominee, Mr. Vijayan said he would be faced politically. The nomination, he said, was guided by his stature as leader of the BJP’s feeder organisation.

“As the BJP’s nominee, his candidature will be faced politically,” he said.

Asked whether the Opposition would come up with a candidate against Mr. Kovind, he said the decision would be taken at the national level. When reporters sought his personal opinion on Mr. Kovind, he said: “We do not know him.”
