Rough seas wreak havoc in Alappuzha

: Rough seas and heavy waves caused damage to many houses along coastal belt of Alappuzha on Monday. The impact of the fury of the sea was felt more in areas such as Karoor, Purakkad and Payalkulangara. 

About 10 houses were totally destroyed while 50 were partially destroyed, said sources. The destroyed houses include those constructed under the tsunami rehabilitation package. Over 100 coconut trees have been uprooted. The district administration shifted about 25 families residing along the coast to safer places. Relief camps were opened at the LP school, Karoor.

The affected people had blocked highway traffic on Saturday and Sunday. The authorities have promised the people to take measures such as strengthening the sea wall and construction of breakwater facility.
