In a raid by Health Department officials at the CKP Junction public market in Thrikadavur, on the outskirts of Kollam city, on Friday morning, large quantities of rotten tuna were seized.
Team leader M.P. Muralidharan, Supervisor of the Thrikadavur Social Health Centre, said the fish was found unfit for human consumption and was destroyed.
Health inspector P.R. Balagopal said the fish was found to be bloated and scalded.
He said that tunas and other fishes were reaching the local markets five to six days after catch from the neighbouring States at cheaper rates. These were kept frozen with ice laced with chemicals such as ammonia.
Mr. Muralidharan said his team had seized rotten fish unfit for human consumption on two occasions in the past six months, from the same market.
