Raising consciousness against ragging

August 01, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:06 am IST - KANNUR:

As a resource person in legal issues concerning the education sector, Y. Vinod Kumar, an administrative staff member of the Kannur University, is now engaged in raising consciousness against ragging on campuses.

Mr. Kumar, Assistant Section Officer of the university, uses his spare time to talk to students and teachers of local colleges on legal, social and psychological ramifications of ragging, which he says is on the rise despite legal safeguards. Raising awareness, he says, is important because law enforcement agencies and authorities of educational institutions are largely unaware of the law on the subject. There are many safeguards against ragging, which has ruined lives of many students, says Mr. Kumar who has authored the book, Ragging and safeguards under law .

The book discusses various aspects of ragging including its definition, history, relationship with law and psychology, among others. It contains commentaries on the University Grants Commission Regulation 2009. It also dwells on anti-ragging Acts of various States, government orders, and circulars.
