Rain fury: relief camps opened in Alappuzha

More than 1,000 families seek shelter

More than thousand families have been accommodated in various camps opened in the district to provide relief to people mostly belonging to coastal areas, affected by the fury of rains since the commencement of monsoon season.

About 30 camps have been opened in Ambalapuzha, Cherthala and Kuttanad taluks. About 5,000 people were accommodated in camps in Ambalapuzha. More than 1,400 people were staying in relief camps in Cherthala.

Many houses collapse

Many houses have collapsed in the rains. The building of the leprosy sanatorium at Noorand was damaged in the heavy rains on Friday and a few inmates were hurt.

The government has promised to construct a new building there.

Several people continued to be affected by diseases that have broken out after the onset of monsoon rains. Quite a few cases of Dengue fever, leptospirosis and dysentery have been brought to the notice of district medical authorities.

Over a 1,000 people have been afflicted with viral fever in the past few days, according to officials.

A few cases of chicken pox have also been reported.
