Principal denies allegations

Row over autonomous status for Brennen College

January 17, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:53 am IST - KANNUR:

The Principal of the Government Brennen College, Thalassery, N. Leena, has denied that she has taken unilateral steps for securing autonomous status for the college.

In an official press release here on Friday, Dr. Leena said she had just followed the instruction of her superiors in the matter. She said that the college had submitted the application for autonomous status for the college as per the instruction of the Director of the Collegiate Education in the wake of the proposed granting of the status to colleges that had secured A grade accreditation of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The college has been included by the government in list of 21 colleges identified for granting the autonomous status. Sree Narayana College and Krishna Menon Memorial Government Women’s College are the other colleges in the district included in the list.

Protests decried

The Principal said the college was now witnessing methods of agitation that the other colleges in the list had seen following the decision of the government. Protestors were burning her effigy, conducting painting exhibition and staging demonstrations as part of a bid to cast aspersions on her, she said adding that the punching for recording the attendance of teachers and staff of the college was disrupted due to the office blockade by the protestors for the past few days.

She also said that the door of her office chamber had been broken.

Call for talks

Though the protesting students had been invited for discussion, they were yet to accept it, Dr. Leena added.
