CPI(M) veteran and Kerala Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan has said that the local government elections in the State clearly shows that only the Left Democratic Front (LDF) can resist the 'communal politics' of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Reacting to the counting trends, which showed the LDF forging ahead in majority of grama panchayats, block panchayats and district panchayats, besides two corporations, Mr. Achuthanandan said the improved performance of the BJP was on account of the UDF's soft stand on communalism.
He termed the UDF's political stances 'dangerous' and hoped that the people would continue to repose faith in the LDF to throw the UDF out of power in the State.
The Opposition Leader said the BJP-SNDP Yogam tie-up had proved a failure. The alliance could not make a mark in any of the strongholds of the two. On the contrary, the LDF was able to make strong inroads in traditional strongholds, he pointed out.
