The first rake carrying pipes for the Kochi- Kootanad- Bangalore- Mangalore LNG pipeline project reached here on January 13 for stacking at a stack yard here.
It was for the first time that the LNG pipes came to the State by rail on bost wagons. The 720-km pipeline project of Gas Authority of India Ltd. (GAIL) would pass through Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
The first rake comprising 45 wagons reached the Kannur South Railway Station here at around 8 p.m. on Monday. The LNG pipes would be transported to the stack yards at Chalod and Mayyil here.
When contacted, S.S. Menon of Sri Transways, the company doing logistic coordination, said around 30 rakes would reach here in the coming weeks.
He said the pipes would be taken from the stack yard to laying points by mid-March. Each rake carried 675 pipes, he said adding that each wagon would have 15 pipes manufactured by PSL Ltd. at the Visakhapatnam plant of GAIL. The pipes were for the phase-II of the project from Aluva to Bangalore and Mangalore, he added.
