Amal Mathew first rank holder in KEAM Engineering celebrating his victory with Father Mathew Joseph, Mother Jancy and brother Nirmal at his home at Kaduthuruthy on Wednesday.

This was a season of entrance examination ranks at Pullankunnel House at Kuruppanthara as Amal Mathew, the eldest of the two sons of Mathew Joseph, who is working as a college professor in Oman, and his wife Jancy Mathew, a homemaker, appeared to be collecting ranks from thin air.

He ranked 85 at the national level in the JEE Advanced, stood first in Cusat CAT, topped the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Common Entrance Test (AME CET) and to top it all, took the first rank in the Kerala Engineering, Architecture and Medical (KEAM) entrance, the results of which were published on Wednesday.

“I prefer to pursue engineering programme at an IIT,” said Amal when asked about his future plans. He has opted for engineering physics programme offered at the IIT as it is more research oriented, Amal said.

He owes the rank and the consistency in performance to a whole lot of people. Amal had completed his schooling till Class X from Oman and joined the Kuriakose Elias English Medium School at Mannanam for higher secondary. His peer group had played a crucial role in his performance, says Amal.

He had joined the coaching programme for entrance at Brilliant, Pala.

George Thomas, director, Brilliant, who was present at Amal's residence when The Hindu spoke to him, says his institutions had one of the finest performances this year. The top nine ranks in medicine and one except all in engineering streams are from his institutions, he claimed. “We are only supporting the students there,” he said.

According to Amal, along with the peer group support and the coaching programme, support from his family had played a key role in keeping him motivated.
