Panel to test audio-visual content

Consent needed for airing poll-related items

April 04, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - ALAPPUZHA:

Candidates or political parties intending to air audio-visual messages in public places as part of the election campaign has to obtain prior permission of the electoral authorities.

A district-level media certification and monitoring committee (MCMC) will examine the content. The MCMC has been set up primarily to examine whether paid news on election appears in media. Permission for airing poll-related items should be sought by candidates by submitting details in prescribed format three days prior to the intended date of presentation.

Unregistered political parties and organisations should seek permission seven days prior to the date of presentation.

The committee will examine if news items contain undue praise or character assassination. It will also survey news items to find out if the same type of message is being disseminated that could be considered under the paid news category.
