Ordinances to check money lenders

Kerala Cabinet on Tuesday decided to recommend promulgation of two Ordinances to check money lenders.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told the media after the Cabinet meeting that the one of the Ordinance was intended to protect deposits of people in non-banking financial institutions. The other would seek to ban high interest rates.

The Chief Minister said that a mission for empowerment of women would be set up with the objective of financial and social empowerment of women. The Social Welfare Department had been asked to prepare the details.

The Cabinet had given administrative and special sanctions for repair of roads to Sabarimala at a cost fo Rs. 67.775 crore. It had also cleared the pay revision of employees of Matsyafed with retrospective effect from July 1, 2009.

Mr. Chandy said that the government would hold discussions with service organisations on August 16 on participatory pension scheme. (The decision comes on the wake of service organisations to go on strike next week.)

A committee would be constituted to provide recommendations on functioning of quarries as directed by the Supreme Court. The departments of Revenue, Industries, Forests, Environment and Geology would be represented in the committee.

He said that the Cabinet had discussed the possibility of drinking water shortages in Thiruvananthapuram in view of the failure monsoon. However, no decision had been taken on restricting water supply.
