Says police have failed to bring culprits to book

Members of the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) walked out of the Assembly on Wednesday accusing the government of failing to curb increasing attacks and violence against women and children.

K. Muraleedharan, Congress, who gave notice for an adjournment motion on the death of two sisters at Attappalam in Walayar and the molestation of six girls at Kalpetta, accused the police of failing to bring the culprits to book. Timely intervention of the police would have prevented the death of at least one girl 52 days after her sister committed suicide. Political intervention delayed the arrest, he said.

The Left Democratic Front that raised the murder of a Dalit girl at Perumbavoor against the UDF during the Assembly elections could not prevent such instances on assuming office. Former State Police Chief T.P. Senkumar was removed on the premise that he had failed to arrest the accused.

There was a spurt in such cases since the new State Police Chief took over. Though the accused in the abduction of an actor in Ernakulam had been arrested, he may go scot-free since the police could not garner sufficient evidence, including his mobile phone, Mr. Muraleedharan said.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the police has taken strong action in all the cases, including the death of the sisters at Walayar. The police had been waiting for the chemical report in this case and the accused would arrested soon, he said.

Not suitable

Mr. Senkumar was not removed for his failure to probe the Perambavoor case, but he was not suitable to hold the position. District Police Chiefs have been directed to prepare register of sex offenders and awareness campaign has been taken up by the Student Police Cadets and Janamaithri Police to avert such incidents. The government is not remaining a mute spectator in such cases, he said.

Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala said the police lacked efficiency and political protection was given to the accused in the Walayar case. Child Welfare Committees have become defunct and the complaint boxes kept in schools have been removed, he said.

Based on the government explanation, Speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan denied notice for the motion and the Opposition walked out in protest.
