One more person was killed in a landslip in Munnar early on Tuesday. The death toll in landslip has now risen to three. According to the official figures, seven persons were killed in rain-related incidents from June 1.
Scariakutty, 42, a resident of Meeanadam in Kottayam district was killed around 3.30 a.m. when earth caved in on the kitchen of a hotel on Colony Road in Munnar town while he was sleeping along with two other employees. The other two employees escaped.
In a major landslip at Manjapra near Cheruthoni, nearly two-third acres of a cultivated land swept away. Landslips were also reported in Vazhathoppe, Adimaly, Panamkutty, Kambilkikandam and Thadiyambadu areas. Mankulam village also witnessed major landslips. Many houses were damaged in the landslips and a house was fully swept away in the muddy waters, reports reaching here said. However, all the family members escaped.
Traffic in many roads in the district was affected and trees were uprooted. As per the official estimate, 11 house were fully destroyed and 175 houses partially damaged in the district till Tuesday.
The total loss was estimated at around Rs 1.4 crore. Standing crops were also destroyed and the loss was estimated at around Rs. 1 crore, said an official at the district control room of the Disaster Management cell, Painau. Munnar town remained cut off from the Old Munnar town. No bus services were conducted in the town on Tuesday also. As per the meteorological department, the rains recorded in the last three days were the highest in more than two decades in the town.
The rainfall recorded in the district on Tuesday was 92.66 m.m. The Periyar River breached its bank and water entered in some houses in Upputhara, Parappu, Karinkulam Chappathu and Vandiperiyar areas.
