According to preliminary reports from the site of the accident, around 35 kilometres from the State capital, the granite piece fell on the workers as they were preparing to begin work for the day. Seven persons got trapped under the granite piece. All of them were rescued by the police and fire force personnel with the help of the local people.

Four of the injured were rushed to the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital. The others have been admitted to the Marayamuttom Taluk Hospital.

Local MLA C.K. Hareendran told TV channels that the quarry appeared to have been functioning without a licence. The incensed locals, who have been campaigning against illegal quarries in the region, said several of the quarries in the area functioned without licences, thanks to the connivance of local politicians and revenue and police officials.
