One person was killed and another seriously injured when one lorry rammed another near the Palm Fibre firm on National Highway-47 at Pathirapally here early on Monday morning.

According to the police, the accident occurred around 5.30 a.m., when a lorry carrying vegetables rammed from behind another lorry, which was carrying coir yarn to the Palm Fibre company, after the latter applied brakes abruptly. The cleaner of the vegetable lorry, Naushad, 35, a native of Nedumkandam in Idukki district, was killed on the spot while the driver of the lorry, Shanawaz, 27, a native of Haripad here, sustained grievous injuries.

The body of Naushad was extricated from the mangled cabin of the lorry after efforts of the police and Fire & Rescue personnel that spanned nearly two hours. Shanawaz was shifted to the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital.
