National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Lalitha Kumaramangalam has condemned attacks on women and children in various places in the district, including Pinarayi, the native place of Chief Minister Pinarayi VIjayan.

After visiting violence-hit areas at Puthankandam in Pinarayi village on Monday, Ms. Kumaramangalam told reporters that the complaints of incidents of attacks on women and children would be taken up at the government level at the Centre. The State government and the police would be asked to submit a report on the issue of violence in the area, she said. Ms. Kumaramangalam said she felt very sad that women were targeted in the acts of violence, especially in the Chief Minister’s native place. It was unfortunate that women were being targeted because of political differences, she added.

The NCW chairperson also said that it was the government’s duty to ensure safety and security to every citizen. Though the Chief Minister could not be held personally responsible for acts of violence in his native place, he should look into such incidents, especially in cases where women were targeted, she observed. Cases of violence in Kannur are not just a political issue, she said adding that they involve violation of human rights.
