Tragedy struck electioneering for the civic polls in the district when Jomon Thomas, vice-chairman of Kottayam municipality, passed away while on the campaign trail here on Tuesday.

Mr. Thomas, 40, who was taking part in the campaign for his wife Elizabeth, an independent candidate from Thazhathangadi (Ward 48), for the upcoming elections, collapsed near the Tallikottu Temple while returning home after a hectic schedule in the morning. He was taken to a private hospital nearby where he breathed his last. The incident occurred around 1 p.m.

The deceased is survived his wife Elizabeth and two children. The body has been kept at the mortuary of the SH Medical Centre here. His funeral will be held later.

Mr. Thomas, who had successfully contested to the Kottayam municipal council as an independent in the 2005 elections had moved to the Congress camp later. However, his relation with the party had soured in the run up to the ensuing elections as he was not given a seat in any of the general wards; Thazhathangadi from where he won has been reserved for women this time.
