Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat slammed the Centre for serving the interests of the rich through its economic policies.

Inaugurating the State women’s convention of the Kerala State Karshaka Thozhilali Union (KSKTU) here on Sunday, she came down heavily on the Modi government for its “obvious disregard for the welfare of farmers and agricultural workers.”

“In India, a large majority of the farmers are suffering, with their lives deeply in debt. Denied work and wages, their only option to feed their families is to take loans at high interest rates from private moneylenders. The banks have given ₹11 lakh crore as loans to big business houses which they are not getting back. They are writing these off, but for the agricultural workers they do not have money,” she said.

She also observed that the Modi government was trying to destroy the MGNREGS by setting aside only limited funds for it. She pointed out that despite repeated demands from Kerala Chief Minister, the Modi government was not yet ready to give the pending wages of the MGNREGS workers. She also alleged that the Modi government was trying to violate the food security Act. “One of the main aspects of the Act is to give food security to pregnant women. The Act mandates that every pregnant woman be given ₹6,000, but the Modi government has refused to implement this Act.” “If we want to save Kerala and India, we have to defeat the Modi government and its communal agenda. We have to defeat its black money politics which is now reaching out to the byelection in Chengannur,” she said.
