The Judicial First Class Magistrate Court at Nedumkandam on Monday extended the remand period of CPI(M)’s Idukki unit former district secretary M.M. Mani, party worker O.G. Madanan, and Kainikari Kuttan till January 14.
A special investigation team (SIT) of the police had arrested them in connection with the murder of INTUC activist Anchery Baby in 1982.
They were produced before the court by 11 a.m. as the remand period ended on Monday and were taken back to the Peerumade sub-jail.
Kuttan, Mani, and Madanan were the first, second, and third accused respectively. The District Court at Thodupuzha had turned down the bail applications of the accused as the prosecution argued that the accused could influence the probe if released.
At the time of the murder, all the accused were released by the court for want of evidences and the SIT was constituted by the State government after Mani claimed at a public speech at Manakkad, near Thodupuzha, that his party had a hit list and three on it had been killed. Anchery Baby was one of the victims mentioned by Mani.
On Monday, the High Court posted for hearing the bail application of Mani to Thursday.
