Minority Commission visits vandalised tombs at cemetery

The State Minority Commission has registered a case suo motu in connection with the vandalisation of the family vaults and tombs at the cemetery of the Shalom Mar Thoma Church at Mylapra near here on Tuesday.

This was announced by Commission Chairman M. Veerankutty and Member V.V. Joshi after visiting the cemetery on Tuesday afternoon.

The Commission has also directed the District Collector and the Superintendent of Police to submit a report on the repeated attacks on the cemetery with in a week.

The cemetery had witnessed repeated vandalisation on three consecutive days a week ago.  Many family vaults and tombs were found damaged and the wall was found defaced with blood stains and abusive writings.

The Commission Chairman said the issue would be discussed with Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala soon. Mr. Veerankutty said the government was bound to ensure protection of the places of worship. Mr Joshi said effective measures would be taken to book the culprits.

The parish priest, FR M.C. Samuel, handed over the complaint regarding the attack on the cemetery to the Commission Chairman.

M. Sureshkumar, Additional District Magistrate; Thykkoottathil Zakeer, National Minority Education Committee member; P. Mohanraj, District Congress Committee member; Akeeramon Kalidasa Bhattathiri, Kerala Yogakshema Sabha president; Kuriakose Mar Cleemis Metropolitan, were also present.
