Minister seeks efforts to restore soil fertility

Minister for Agriculture V.S Sunilkumar has called for an all-out effort to regain the fertility of soil, purity of water, and serenity of air.

He was inaugurating a farmers’ market window on the Krishi Vigyan Kendra premises, Ambalavayal, on Monday.

Mr. Sunilkumar said the public, policy-makers, scientists, officers, and farmers should contribute to this cause in their own way, as this was inevitable for the well being of future generations.

“We have deposited large quantities of chemicals on the earth to enhance productivity, which has gradually eroded soil fertility and polluted groundwater,” Mr. Sunilkumar said, adding that unrestricted anthropogenic activities had also polluted air and destructed biodiversity.

Mr. Sunilkumar also stressed the need for value-addition to ensure adequate remuneration to farmers.
