Military plane makes emergency landing

A military transport aircraft made an emergency landing minutes after it took off from the 17th Forward Base Supply Unit of the Indian Air Force (IAF) at Shanghumugham here on Friday evening.

Official sources said the IAF's Russian made Soviet-era Antonov 32 medium- range transport aircraft had developed engine trouble as it ascended to cruise altitude immediately after take off. They said there were 10 officials on board the plane.

The Thiruvananthapuram airport's fire-and-rescue machinery were put on standby as the pilot alerted the IAF's Southern Air Command headquarters and the civilian Air Traffic Control tower.
