The Communist Party of India (Marxist) district secretary P. Jayarajan on Friday surrendered before the district and sessions court at Thalassery.
One of the accused in the case of murder of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) functionary E. Manoj, he had been facing arrest by the central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probing the murder case since the High Court's rejection of his anticipatory bail plea on February 11.
Mr. Jayarajan, who had been hospitalised in the Pariyaram Medical College, got himself discharged from hospital on Friday morning. Before he went to the district and sessions court at Thalassery, he spent some time at the party-controlled Thalassery Co-operative Hospital.
The court remanded him in judicial custody till March 11.He has been charged under section 15 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. His counsel's plea that he be shifted to a hospital was rejected by the court. Mr. Jayarajan would be shifted to the Central Jail here. The court said that it was the prison Superintendent's discretion to decide which hospital he should be send for treatment.
CBI officials said that they would submit a request to the court to secure his custody for questioning in the case.
Meanwhile, Mr. Jayarajan told reporters outside the court that the CBI's bid to charge him under UAPA was part of a conspiracy to implicate CPI(M) leaders in fabricated cases. CHief Minister Oommenc Chandy was supporting the Sangh Parivar's agenda to arrest in fake cases. He said that political opponents are trying to portray the CPI(M) as a terrorist outfit.
