A madrassa school teacher was stabbed to death allegedly by a three-member group who barged into a mosque in the Choori locality here late Monday.

The police said the madrassa teacher, Muhammed Riyaz, 28, was attacked by unidentified assailants at 11.45 p.m. when he was asleep in his room at the Old Juma Masjid in Choori locality.

Riyas was killed on the spot and was shifted to the General Hospital, Kasaragod Town Sub-Inspector of Police P. Ajith Kumar told The Hindu on Tuesday.

Riyaz, a native of Sullia in Karnataka, has been staying here for the last eight years, the police said.

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has called for a day-long hartal in Kasaragod Assembly constituency limits on Tuesday in protest against the “unprovoked” attack. The situation in and around the town is reported to be stable, said police sources.

Senior police officers have convened a special meeting and strengthened security arrangements in view of the hartal.
