Flood situation continues to be grim in parts of the district. Overflowing rivers and canals have submerged low lying areas of the Kuttanad taluk, one of the worst-hit areas in the district.
According to Revenue Department officials, relief camps have been opened in seven villages in the taluk. People from around 1,000 affected families had been shifted to relief camps during the past couple of days, officials said.
Kainakary, Pulinkunnu, and Kavalam are among the affected places.
The administration has taken measures to evacuate more people from affected areas in case the situation worsens.
The water level has increased in Kuttanad region following heavy rain in Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, and Idukki districts.
Most of the roads in Kuttanad are submerged, affecting vehicular traffic. Traffic snarls were reported on the Alappuzha-Changanassery (AC) road on Thursday. Traffic was suspended on the Muttar-Neerattupuram road.
The situation is also not much different in other parts of the district. Flooding has also been reported from Ambalappuzha, Cherthala, and Karthikappally taluks. The Revenue Department has opened relief camps in Purakkad panchayat.
