Local body polls may have NOTA provision

'An election would be declared invalid if at least 50 per cent votes were polled under NOTA category'

May 28, 2014 11:34 am | Updated 11:34 am IST - Thrissur:

Introducing the NOTA (None of the Above) provision in local body elections is under the active consideration of the Election Commission, State Election Commissioner K. Sasidhasran Nair has said.

The State Election Commission would ask the State government to bring in necessary constitutional amendments for this, he said while addressing a workshop organised at the Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA) at Mulangunnathukavu, near here, recently for providing awareness of the conduct of local body elections.

An election would be declared invalid if at least 50 per cent votes were polled under NOTA category, he said.

Presidents, secretaries and electrical registration officers of grama, block and district panchayats were given training in the first phase.

Returning officers and assistant returning officers will be given training in the second stage. Elected representatives and officials at the lower level too would be given training.

KILA Director P.P. Balan and senior officials participated in the workshop.

The training programme being conducted by the Election Commission in association with the KILA will conclude in October.
