Legal notice to Minister

June 03, 2010 08:05 pm | Updated 08:05 pm IST - ALAPPUZHA:

Food and Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran has been served a legal notice alleging contempt of court for sitting in the official chair of the District Consumer Forum president during the inauguration of the District Consumer Grievance Redressal Forum Complex here last week.

The notice, served by T.M. Subhash, a lawyer here, said the forum held powers equal to a Judicial First Class Magistrate and by sitting in the official chair of the forum president, Mr. Divakaran, who holds a constitutional post, had shown contempt of court.

The Minister had called in a person from the gathering to the witness box and “cross-examined” him.

This was criminal contempt, the notice said, adding that as per law, Mr. Divakaran should not be allowed to continue as a Minister. The Minister has been asked to reply within five days, failing which legal action would be initiated against him.
